Habitat for Humanity East Bay
Halfway through Habitat East Bay's largest Build-A-Thon ever, more than 500 community supporters, organizations, and Habitat East Bay homeowners have managed to build up to the second story on the 20 homes that are schedule to be completely framed this coming Tuesday at the Edes Avenue development in Oakland.
Working through some of the warmest days that the East Bay has seen in 2009, we have witnessed the true power and spirit of community members coming together and focusing their energy on one mission - building affordable, sustainable homes. The community support has been overwhelming for some. "These homes are built out of love," explained Emma Navarro, future Habitat homeowner. "When these volunteers come out here to build our homes, they do it for people that they want to help. That is incredible!"
Day two of the Build-A-Thon was all about finding love in the community. The day was highlighted by the "Jimberly Build" - Jim and Kimberly "service wedding" celebration. The two newly-weds met on a Habitat construction site in New Orleans while volunteering several years ago and jokingly professed thatit was "Love at first saw." (Jim first fell for Kimberly while she was using a circular saw). Having spent their lives working in non-profits and helping others, they remarked that it only seemed fitting that they celebrate their new marriage by continuing to focus on others.
The remaining two days of Build-A-Thon promise to be productive and we look forward to working with everyone that plans to come out on site! Many thanks to everyone that has already come out on site, and helped make the first two days a complete success.
